Adviser Profile

Mr Seng Han Thong had been a long-standing elected Member of Parliament for Ang Mo Kio GRC, from 1996 to 2006. When the electoral division boundaries were redrawn in the 2006 General Elections, he contested for Yio Chu Kang SMC and won by an  impressive margin.

Mr Seng completed his GCE ‘A’ Level in the Teochew-clan association run Tuan Mong High School in 1967. He worked as a court interpreter for 3 years, before moving on to become a reporter with the now-defunct Nanyang Siang Pau. Mr Seng was a well-known figure in the Chinese newspaper industry during his 19 years there, and was eventually promoted to Deputy Chief Editor at Lianhe Zaobao.

During his career, he also pursued a Diploma in Management Studies at Singapore Institute of Management. In 1993, he graduated from Brunel University, England, with a Master of Business Administration.

Mr Seng is currently Assistant Secretary General at the National Trade Union Congress. His interests reflect his down-to-earth personality – reading, travelling, listening to light music, collecting stamps and coins.

Know Your Estate

It was believed that Yio Chu Kang Road and its surroundings were established by Chinese settlers in the 1840s. The name YIO CHU KANG was believed to have been named after a certain Mr. Yeo, one of the earliest settlers there, who built his house (chu) along the river (kang).

Today, Yio Chu Kang houses around 12,000 residential units, 400 commercial units and 123 hawker stalls.

Located in the heart of Ang Mo Kio, Yio Chu Kang today is home to many well-known landmarks such as Ang Mo Kio Community Library, Ang Mo Kio Polyclinic, Ang Mo Kio Hub, Yio Chu Kang Sports Centre, Yio Chu Kang CC, Ang Mo Kio CC, Nanyang Polytechnic and Grassroots Club, just to name a few.

In March 2009, the NHG 1-Health @ Ang Mo Kio was officially opened at Broadway Plaza, offering residents the convenience of day surgery and specialist clinic services at their doorstep.

On top of the various amentities available, improvement works such as the various Lift Upgrading Projects and Barrier-Free Access (BFA) projects by the Town Council are also high on the agenda. Residents can be assured that their living environment is adequately taken care of, and can look forward to a seamless integration of living, recreation and transport.

There are 9 Residential Committees and 1 Neighbourhood Committee serving the residents of Yio Chu Kang.

Did You Know?

On 16th October 2007, a fire engulfed the Blk 628 market and food centre in Ang Mo Kio Avenue 4. The next 4 months saw the Town Council working tirelessly with the grassroots organisations and the 628 Hawkers' Association to help them construct the temporary market, located beside Yio Chu Kang CC. It was officially opened on 15 February, ahead of schedule to coincide with the Lunar New Year peak period, much to the delight of stall owners and residents at large. The Town Council now helps the 628 Hawkers' Association maintain cleanliness at the common areas of the temporary market. The new market and food centre is being rebuilt at its original site and is expected to be ready by Jan 2010.
