Adviser Profile

Prime Minister Mr Lee Hsien Loong was first elected Member of Parliament (MP) for Teck Ghee Constituency in 1984.  Teck Ghee became part of Ang Mo Kio GRC in 1991, and since then Mr. Lee has led the team of MPs in the GRC to serve residents.

Mr. Lee studied in Nanyang Girls' High School (Co-Ed Primary Section), Catholic High School, and National Junior College. He graduated from the University of Cambridge, and later the Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University. Before entering politics, Mr. Lee was a Brigadier-General in the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF).

Since 1984, his ministerial duties have included the areas of defence, finance, trade and the economy. As Prime Minister since 12 August 2004, Mr. Lee has launched policies to build a competitive economy and an inclusive society.  He introduced new programmes to upgrade the education system, invest in R&D and infrastructure, and transform the city and living environment.

Mr. Lee is also deeply concerned about the social development of the country. He launched measures such as the Workfare Incentive Scheme (a negative income tax to encourage and reward older, low-income workers) and Community Care (ComCare), an endowment fund to support a wide range of welfare and social programmes targeted at the low income families and the poor.

In Ang Mo Kio, Mr. Lee has worked with grassroots leaders and government agencies to improve the lives of the residents, and to make Ang Mo Kio an ideal place to work, play and live. Major upgrading projects have renewed most of the residential blocks and neighbourhoods of the HDB new town. Lift upgrading programmes have given better access to homes. Schools have been upgraded through the Prime programme, to offer first class education opportunities for the young.  The Community Care Network (CCN) reaches out to help older citizens, particularly the needy and those living alone. Each year funds have been raised to grant scholarships and bursaries for many students in their education.

Mr. Lee is also Adviser to Teck Ghee GROs.  He regularly attends various grassroots activities in Teck Ghee and other divisions, where he takes pleasure in directly engaging the residents of Ang Mo Kio GRC on a personal basis.

Know Your Estate

TECK GHEE division houses around 12,500 residential units, 250 commercial units and 300 hawker stalls.

The transportation networks provide residents with seamless travel options both within Ang Mo Kio estate and to other parts of Singapore. On top of the various amenities available, improvement works such as the various Lift Upgrading Projects and Barrier-Free Access (BFA) projects by the Town Council are also high on the agenda.

An interesting landmark to look out for is the Ang Mo Kio Swimming Complex at Avenue 1, which won the 1986 Singapore Institute Architects Architectural Award for its unique "tetrahedral skylight" design. Till today, the swimming complex remains as a memorable landmark of Teck Ghee. Being close to Bishan Park, Teck Ghee residents can also enjoy the green environment there.

Teck Ghee Community Club undertakes from time to time the induction ceremony for new citizens, one of whom was the international actress Gong Li who recited her pledge and received her citizenship certificate to become a Singapore Citizen in 2008.

In spite of the renewal and redevelopment programmes, Teck Ghee still retains its charming kampong (‘village’ in Malay) spirit of sharing and neighbourliness among the residents.

Second Advisers Dr S Vasoo and Mr Yeo Toon Chia also work closely with the 9 Resident Committees in the division to encourage residents to participate in improving their neighbourhood and promote community bonding.
