She graduated from Nanyang Technological University of Singapore with a Bachelor of Engineering (Civil) in 1985. Sponsored by her employer, she furthered her studies in University of Liverpool (United Kingdom) and obtained her Master of Science (Engineering) in 1990. Currently she is a principal partner in LBW Consultants LLP, an engineering firm she founded in 1996. A high-profile member of the Institute of Engineers Singapore (IES), Er Lee made history by becoming its first woman Vice President in 2000. In recognition of her contributions, she was subsequently elected as the first woman President of IES on 24 May 2008. She is also the first Singaporean to be bestowed Honorary Fellowship by the Institute of Structural Engineers, United Kingdom. Beyond her professional contributions, Er Lee has her heart very close to the underprivileged and the working-class families living in the heartlands. She is well-known for her down-to-earth personality, tireless drive and passion for her responsibilities as a people's representative. Under Er Lee's watch, many new and unique projects were established to cater to the needs of the residents. She initiated Job Navigators Scheme, a first of its kind in Singapore, to help needy residents obtain employment. Other schemes include free weekly Traditional Chinese Medicinal treatments, mobile clinic services, mobile library services, tution fee subsidies and regular handouts of vegetables, bread and hot meals. As a grassroots MP who will not hesitate to help residents communicate their problems to the government, Er Lee is indeed a vocal Member of Parliament. She has personally helped to push forth government approval for several development projects in NSS. Such pro-activeness and a good listening ear contributed to her popularity among the residents. Er Lee is an active advocate of physical fitness and healthy lifestyle. She champions the promotion of sports among Singaporeans. Under her leadership as President of the Singapore Table Tennis Association, plans were drawn up for the development of local youth talent and improve the welfare of national table tennis players. It comprises of 9,200 HDB flats in Yishun Town with an estimated population of 52,000, and 150 commercial units. It also consists of four private estates - Green View Neighbourhood, Lentor Neighbourhood, Springleaf Neighbourhood and Thomson Neighbourhood.
Er Lee's vision is to make Nee Soon South a better place for all, with the mantra "together we can make a difference". There are a total of six Resident Committees (RCs) and four Neighbourhood Committees to ensure that the views and aspirations of residents are well represented. Indeed, improvement works such as the various Lift Upgrading Projects and Barrier-Free Access projects by the Town Council are also high on the agenda. Blessed with the natural setting of the scenic Lower Seletar Reservoir, Nee Soon South is set to be transformed into a new lifestyle attraction for families in the north-eastern part of Singapore, with new features and activities for the community to enjoy. Here is a sneak preview of two exciting new projects coming up: Family Bay: Located near to Yishun Town, the Family Bay aims to encourage more family-oriented leisure activities, as well as to provide the public with more opportunities to enjoy water sports. A heritage bridge with a viewing deck leading to the middle of the reservoir will be constructed. The public will be able to enjoy a relaxing close-up view of the wide expanse of tranquility of the water. Other facilities to be added include an outdoor stage, a multi-purpose amphitheatre, water play area and a car park.
Rowers' Bay: Closer to the reservoir dam is Rowers’ Bay, a long, straight watercourse ideal for competitive rowing, canoeing and dragon boating activities. The existing open grassland will be upgraded with park facilities including viewing benches whilst retaining the serenity of the area, so future events can be held. Both projects are scheduled for completion in early 2010.
